Green Day Bring Fire (Literally) to Coachella Set — Palm Tree Goes Up in Flames Mid-Performance

Coachella’s first weekend went off with a bang — and then another bang — and then a palm tree quite literally burst into flames. Yep, Green Day’s headline debut turned into a real-life rock ‘n’ roll inferno.
The band was ripping through their set on Saturday night when one of the fireworks veered off course and blasted into the artist section. The spark caught hold of a palm tree, which promptly ignited, sending flames perilously close to the crowd. Festivalgoers watched in disbelief as fire crews dashed in to tackle the blaze.
“This firework just flew into the crowd and exploded right next to FaZe Banks and all of his friends,” wrote one witness on X/Twitter, capturing the chaos. A video posted by FaZe Clan’s founder himself showed paramedics checking over his friend Zack, who was apparently right by the exploding tree. Talk about being too close to the action.
Despite the chaos, Green Day kept things rolling — true punk rockers to the end. It was a huge night for the trio, marking their very first time headlining Coachella. Billie Joe Armstrong had made a guest appearance way back in 2014 with The Replacements, but this was their big solo spotlight — and wow, did they light it up (maybe too literally).
The set was packed with iconic anthems like Boulevard of Broken Dreams, Holiday, and tracks from their latest album Saviors. Billie even popped up earlier in the weekend with the Go-Go’s to sing Head Over Heels, because why not casually crash a classic?
Green Day also recently celebrated 20 years of their generation-defining album American Idiot, dropping a deluxe edition complete with unearthed demos and a behind-the-scenes doc — which, after Saturday night, could probably use a sequel titled When Coachella Caught Fire.
Coachella’s chaos continues next weekend (April 18–20), with Lady Gaga, Travis Scott, and Post Malone set to headline, and fire-free fingers crossed for appearances from Missy Elliott, Charli XCX, Megan Thee Stallion, Ed Sheeran, and Blackpink’s Jennie & Lisa.
Moral of the story? When Green Day says they’re gonna bring the heat — believe them.
